Design the medicine first —Veterinary Preventive Care Plans

A preventive care plan lives or dies on clinical design, not software. What goes in each tier, how it is priced against your own invoice averages, and how the team presents it at the exam table decide whether clients enroll and renew. This guide covers the plan itself; the billing is the easy part.

What goes into a veterinary preventive care plan

Core tier: exams, vaccines, diagnostics

The entry tier covers what every pet should get annually — wellness exams, core vaccines, and baseline screening. Price it against your own average annual spend for a compliant patient, not against the chains.

Mid tier: add dental and parasite prevention

Dental prophylaxis and year-round parasite prevention are where compliance usually collapses — they are also the highest-value additions. Bundling them monthly removes the single-invoice shock.

Life-stage tiers beat one-size plans

Puppies and kittens need a first-year plan built around the vaccine series and spay/neuter. Seniors need twice-yearly exams and expanded screening. Life-stage tiers let clients see their pet in the plan.

Unlimited exams: the retention lever

Practices that include unlimited or discounted office visits see members come in earlier and more often — which catches problems while they are cheap and keeps the relationship warm.

What to leave out

Sick care, emergencies, and surgery do not belong in a preventive plan. Keep the promise narrow and keep it profitable; a plan that tries to be insurance will price itself out of reach.

From design to enrolled members

01

Pull your own numbers first

Average annual preventive spend per compliant patient, your most common invoice items, and your current compliance rate. The plan is priced from your data, not a template.

02

Build two or three tiers and name them

Names clients can repeat — not Bronze/Silver/Gold. Each tier should have an obvious 'this is my pet' answer.

03

Script the exam-table offer

The technician or doctor presents the plan at the moment the client is looking at today's invoice: 'Everything we did today is included in the plan for $X a month.'

04

Automate billing and renewals

Monthly drafts, automatic renewal reminders, and a member list you can actually see. A plan that depends on the front desk remembering to rebill will quietly die.

We dropped two of our worst PPO contracts in year one. The membership plan replaced that revenue and then some — and we finally control our own fee schedule.

Preventive care plan questions

What should a veterinary preventive care plan include?
At minimum: annual wellness exams, core vaccines, and baseline diagnostics. Most practices add a mid tier with dental prophylaxis and parasite prevention, and a life-stage structure so puppies, adults, and seniors each see a plan that fits.
How do I price a preventive care plan?
Start from your own numbers: the average annual preventive spend of a compliant patient, divided monthly, with a modest discount for commitment. Pricing below your own averages to compete with chain plans is how plans lose money.
Is a preventive care plan the same as pet insurance?
No — and it should not try to be. A preventive plan covers predictable, scheduled care at your practice. Insurance covers accidents and illness. Keeping the two clearly separate protects your pricing and avoids insurance regulation.
How many tiers should a plan have?
Two or three. More than that slows down the exam-table conversation and confuses clients. Life-stage tiers (puppy/kitten, adult, senior) are the most natural structure.
How do practices get clients to enroll?
At the exam table, against today's invoice. When the client can see that today's services are included in the plan for a monthly amount, enrollment becomes a math decision instead of a sales pitch.
