excited to have a part two here with uh elevation and and hear what these guys are doing for dental practices it's gonna be great yes on a recent uh episode we had um the all the fellas at the at Wood River Dental talking about how they grew their patient membership program fascinating conversation if you ask me um they have another business that they operate together which is awesome called elevation Association so once again Ryan Jared and Dan welcome back to the show guys how you doing

good awesome thanks today we're going be talking about elevation Association you guys have it seems to me you guys have figured out how to operate a dental practice which in my long time in dentistry is a rarity a lot of practice owners struggle with that because I I would imagine that they're focused on uh teeth and oral health care and not business and and I strongly believe after spending some time with you guys that you guys have some Secret Sauce that uh will help a lot

of practice owners out there so once again real quickly introduce you guys from Ryan Jared Dan in that order introduce you guys yourselves to our audience and we'll get into this episode on operating a dental practice awesome so I'm Ryan passy I've U came on board at Wood River dentl about uh four years ago uh 2019 December right before covid uh Jared and Dan brought me on to help uh work with the practice and then they talked about a couple other ideas that they had in

store to uh um to do elevation Association was one of those which was kind of a um an opportunity to work with Dental practices and have some adventures and some fun so um my background is in retail was an executive retail manager for 28 years and so Dentistry for me was new and uh just L the opportunity to get in work with Dr Hill and Dr Nelson they're fantastic men knew them and their families here in the community and uh just excited to go to work

for them and learn about dentistry and to uh have some fun so was a great um it was a great opportunity to get in and do that and it's been a fun exciting ride since then so awesome Jared yeah so I'm Jared Hill I am an co-owner of wooder Dental Care with my partner Dan Nelson and together the three of us me and Ryan and Dan we started a um a second company called elevation Association um I I I graduated 2006 I bought a practice in

2008 with the intent to partner because I did not know anything about the business and I was still learning about cutting teeth um and so um I I figured I had T my plate however my the the guy I was going to partner with decided to uh move and leave and so I bought the whole practice by myself and I continued to trudge I would say for the next 10 years put my head down and just kind of worked and that's the beauty it's one thing

about Dentistry is you you all dentists Sur well most dentists survive and do and do well in spite of themselves they don't know how much they they could do and so um and so um I I finally found uh Dan Nelson partner that complimented me and and practice and and we had this huge Synergy effect together and then um we got super busy again and and put our heads down and continued to trudge until we we brought Ryan on and Ryan brought just a different mindset

he did not have preconceived ideas about how a dental practice should run you know so so good yeah and it was very refreshing we we get he he would ask us questions that that that we didn't know I mean almost every day we we gave him a pair of headphones and said watch these YouTube videos and learn how to interpret the data and and and and give us the the retail side of it and so he he did that and and he come and ask us

questions we didn't didn't know which was very very refreshing so we we figured a lot of stuff out a lot of stuff out and um and anyway we'll talk more about what we figured out and how we decided to have uh to share this with all the other practices that that we that we can awesome Dam yeah let me put my glasses on so I look smarter um is that what it is there I don't know it doesn't help I probably look a solid 3% smarter

than when they're off so uh I'm Dan um so my background you know it uh a little bit different I took the slow Bo boat through uh school um I ran a successful contracting company uh through my 20s uh with the ultimate goal of of Landing in dental school but uh I wasn't in any hurry I was I I definitely tried to enjoy those you know those uh seasons of my life and ultimately uh graduated dental school in 2012 uh Midwestern University down in Arizona went

through uh the Air Force including their uh their AGD and uh that really I think set me up nicely for um what was to come next and yeah like Jared said we we partnered uh at Wood River dentl in in 2017 and uh through the you know the the introduction of um uh a common friend in in Japan he brought us together and we've uh we've kind of been going since and you know elevation Association and I don't know if he'll actually take credit for this

so I'm going to give it to him it was born of Jared's idea um this was something that when when I first came here we have this we have a really beautiful nice building that you can see I'm sitting in our conference room right now and where I'm sitting used to be our office and it was a big dance floor and uh and I'm not making that up this building used to be a gym and a hair salon and a dance studio so we would sit

in the middle of the dance studio yeah you'd think we'd dance it wasn't as common as you think you guys have Tik Tok dances yeah one would think right so but what we did do is talk a lot and Jared at at that time as we're sitting in this room he started to lay out this idea that he had about bringing docks into Sun Valley where we live and where we practice is because it is a destination and said he said what I'd really like to

see is let's bring some like-minded docs together that can collaborate put our defenses down share best practices and just help each other out and let's create a community of of strong entrepreneurial doctors that that we can help each other succeed and so that was the seeds of that and um you know it was something that when Ryan came on board he was the lynchpin to make all of it happen you know like Jared said he came in with and again Ryan won't his own virtue so

we will um but his his fresh take and and and look his business you know um his take on business was so good for us on looking at things and I have to tell a quick story before uh this goes on too much longer about Jared Jared is one of the calmest human beings I've ever met in my life he doesn't get rattled he doesn't get when he's mad his mad it looks like he's hungry you know so nice I mean maybe he is a little

hungry yeah and I remember we got a report from birkart they ran a practice report for us and it came back that our Paro was what was it Jared 3% 6% 4% 4% so 4% it was my first time I'd ever seen Jared Matt and he was legit like mad and how is this possible why is this happening what are we doing you know and so right after that um Ryan came on and you know Ryan noticed it right away and started pointing out stuff he's

like why are you guys doing this why is this like this and um it really started to build from there where we knew we had the our Lynch pin for offering much more than we currently were doing and you know it's not that Jared and I don't understand business or didn't understand completely what was happening another big part of of what we recognized was happening is that we lack bandwidth at the end of the day you know that that even together uh which he ran a

two do practice by himself for several years um even with me coming on you know you're running so hard clinically that by the and we're just a four-day work week we don't even work five days a week which is super common now for a lot of practices is that is that you just run out of bandwidth and you need someone to show you that easy button you need some help along the way and so Ryan provided so much of that and shouldered so much on top

of bringing his incredible business expertise to the table so that was really the birth of of of ea uh it's come long ways since then but that was how it started just just an interesting you know note on Dentistry is it is such a unique U business because the docks are the business right and if they're not downstairs working on somebody like we're not producing so it's such a unique business in that model like that the the owners sometimes are the producers yeah and like if

they're not down there working we're not making any money so it's it in that aspect is very different than other traditional businesses right because yes the dock is the the main driving force for the for the practice and the revenue so it it is a unique business model so for sure unless but unless you have a patient benefit plan right Jordan there we go yeah unless you have a patient Benefit Plan yes then you generate Revenue without uh docks at the chair hopefully they're in Hawaii

or somewhere cool uh taking a break um yeah this is awesome so tell our audience what exactly is elevation Association I'm going to let Jared field this one okay yeah so elevation Association is really a professional and personal development collaborative group for Dennis so uh we we try to not lump ourselves with Consultants or coaches sure because I um they're they're fine and they have their use at times um but we we're really more of a a community that that work with each other and and

hold each other accountable um we having said that there is we do have a a a progression plan to help this the struggling dentist or the frustrated dentist or or the or the dentist who is you know kind of at his wits ends or or ready to kind of call it quits we we sure we we really want to help those guys girls whoever they are because that was me I mean that that was us for for a while like I was you know 2016 I

was ready to be done I was I was like what is the fastest way to get out of this of this uh profession that that I'm in and it wasn't that it wasn't productive because it was very productive and and made money but there was there was just we were I was missing some components that I didn't know uh were so vital and and important I mean um you know success isn't it doesn't equal making money that that that's that's a hard lesson to learn sometimes

and when you grow up poor you think that that's what success is is is making money and and and only a byproduct yep only a byproduct yeah and it matters what you do along the way and so we we uh we like I said in our in our own practice me and Dan and Ryan we learned a lot of things about um one running the business right we we we we we learned how to create this operating system that allows the the dentist to um to

run a business like like a professional business should be run not like this system that you inherited it from the 1950s you know the this old School mentality right I mean you got to you got to update your operating system of How It's run not not eaglesoft not open but how the business is run that that's your operating system and what we've done is we've Incorporated certain principles and we call that our our leadership plan so we help Dennis first and foremost to to ride the

ship let's get everything going in the right direction everybody rowing in the same direction yep set our our our our our goals let's set our beag our big hairy audacious goals and then let's work down from there and and and and then once you get that thing going and it starts to run like a machine that's awesome but that's where a lot of Consultants stop or a lot of coaches stop they help you with your practice help you go with it we take it a step

further and say okay now how do you use that well-run well oiled very productive very profitable business now to run the life that you want to live and and and so the The Next Step the next tier the next progression is is designing your life and and that's all about um how you want to live outside the practice and within the practice what what type of Dentistry do you want to do what you know and and then you can start to set goals that complement each

other because if you just have your well oil machine it's it gets it can get out of control it can control your life and you know you're I didn't take a vacation for I don't know how many years I never took off Spring Break while my kids were young um I just didn't know how to do it because I figured that that that was that was what you do and so um so the this after you you know get the business up and rolling and running

and doing really well then you then you design your life and now you have success but you also have U the type of life that you want to live and then once you have those two things in in play and in motion now you think about the the third thing which is the last pillar that we have or the last Peak we have and that and that's leaving a legacy so now how do you want to be remembered you know what what kind of things do

you want to do for your community for your family for the world uh whatever it is and so that's called the legacy plan so essentially elevation Association helps other dentists one create a leadership plan A Life Plan and legacy plan so cool yeah I absolutely love that and I think a lot of practices need that help I know including myself I I I was running boomcloud without an operating system for a while in the early days and uh my work life balance or lifestyle at you

know during that time was a wreck and uh it's no fun to be owning a business and not having a quality life as well that's really rough so I love that you guys are doing some something like this we I think we found our operating system because well I knew what I wanted in the early days I just couldn't do it all uh starting a company from scratch uh but when I brought my twin brother in Justin he's our chief operating officer and integrator over here

at boomcloud and he helped he helped kind of shape the business and and help me while I was doing all the Visionary crazy stuff um and I can't I can't emphasize enough uh one having an operating system and two having a plan to for your life because most practice owners have a life after Dentistry and then a legacy I absolutely love those those uh your mission or your your core uh values in helping practice I think that's pretty cool so how how does a I'm a

part of several masterminds for for entrepreneurs and and software Founders and we meet like every month and we help each other out is that kind of how you guys organize this type of Association are you guys meeting together on a regular basis and helping other practice owners out and you said it's a community I'm like like I said I'm a part of several of these in in with other SAS Founders software as a service um and it's been very helpful for me uh as I've grown

the company in different stages so walk us through like what is the experience for somebody to join elevation Association good question Ryan why don't you take that so uh we we have um a couple different Avenues to come and get involved with elevation Association so um one thing is we work with dental practices on a week toe basis if that's something like we have different membership offerings we have like a basic program if you just want to come learn a little bit about elevation Association we

do like a a monthly webinar you can be a part of um so a real low low entry level just to to kind of get to know us and get familiar with what we've got going on and then we we do more intensive like if you would like us to get on board with you implement the operating system commit to your practice we've got like a full-blown we work with you every week type membership and what's included in that we uh implement the operating system in

your practice we help set up accountability charts and we help set up uh you know core values and core focus and we get a 10-year plan in place and then work backwards to a three-year plan a one-year plan and down to your quarterly goals we get those in place for you and then we pull the metrics from your practice every week we we pull a bunch of kpis we go through those on a weekly call and then uh make sure you know we're we're highlighting anything

where there's issues and helping you work through that and uh working with your practice to get get your uh practice you know going and and running smooth um once we get to a point where you feel like you know Weekly's too frequent we we do once a month you know and can kind of scale that back if you want on a monthly program that also works really good um meeting once a month for for an hour going over your metrics meeting once a month as well

on kind of your long-term Vision those kind of things so so there if you get go to our website there's a membership page you can kind of get details about the three different levels there uh in addition to that we do we do some ex uh fund summits and uh Retreats uh we just got home from uh El Salvador in February we went down to El Salvador for a week U took down 20 dentists and their wives so there's a I think there was 42 of

us down there uh spent a week at uh surf camp at misant Surf we rode horses we we backpacked into some uh volcanoes just had a great week and we we talked about life life design we have a full life design course that we went through down there uh we're making plans for Nicaragua in 2025 for a week so we typically do it over Valentine's week because it's a good week to get away with your spouse Jordan I'm gonna need to request some time off I

was gonna say the same thing uh our wife just went down and checked out the venue and uh made sure everything was fantastic uh surf in mountain biking yeah let's go everything like it's going to be fantastic trip and again it's like Jared was talking about your practice is one thing but we also want to help you like you know um have a great life and part of that we we want to create some of that for you as well come on a fantastic trip with

us bring your spouse you know get away from the business to work on the business work on your life uh create where you want to go and then you know we we also started in 501c3 nonprofit called The Dental Legacy Foundation um could probably do a whole other podcast on that but uh we've established a couple dental clinics over in Africa and there's opportunities for elevation Association members to come over to Africa to kind of start working on that Legacy component you know getting like giving

back serving people thinking about like what do you want to leave behind when you go and those experience are just fantastic like we've got great Partners over there we work in this remote hospital it's just a fantastic facility with people we love and we go to the schools and the orphanages and the and the dental clinics and it's just a fantastic time to like again utilize this amazing skill set that you guys have as practitioners and to to give back to people who who don't have

access to care um there's like one dentist per million people in Tanzania it's it's crazy wow and so again this gives you guys as part of elevation Association just gives you opportunity to you know focus on giving back and having a life of significance not just success right so sure that's it's part of what we're all about is helping the doc again develop those life Leadership Legacy plans and and to provide an Avenue where you can go do that I I love this so much because

I see so I have two two brother-in-laws that are both dentist one's a pediatric dentist just down the street from you guys in Twin FS Idaho and and one that's an orthodontist in Texas and I can see varying degrees of happiness at times based off of how their practice is going and what I see and I I've seen this just the short time I've been working in this space um there Dennis are extremely intelligent extremely passionate especially about good patient care because you you were all

too smart uh to you could have made a lot more money doing something else in most cases I think there's just a raw intellect that goes with being a dentist that you don't see in other other Industries um but I also see a I would say by per capita probably a lack of of Happiness um just because of how beat up you get in your day-to-day operations of running a practice and that's sad to me because man there is you guys deserve to be happy you're

providing such a great service to patients you're you're working so hard and you've already sacrificed so much just to get through school and buying your practice and paying all the we won't even get into all the debt that it takes to get to that point and then to to walk into a business that just beats you up um how how horrible does that sound and so I think what you guys are offering if I could summarize is a a a way to take all of that

build some process to to add stability to your business so that you can go out and enjoy your life and I love the Legacy side of it too because with that kind of intellect and that kind of and that kind of offering that you can offer to the your community and to the future uh uh Generations you absolutely should have have that as part of your your ecosystem as how am I going to leave something behind so that our society our kids and what they move

into can be better off than we are I think that's fantastic and you bring up a to your point Bentley you know we were recently on Mark hostess's podcast as well and he uh and his uh his nonprofit joined with our nonprofit and he was able to take a team over with Ryan and uh visit you know the the clinics we established over in Tanzania and he made a great point and it's that if you want to be reinvigorated by Dentistry to find meaning and happiness

is go do some service go do something like a humanitarian Aid trip you know and and where the people are unbelievably grateful and they are you know the the work when you're doing it on that level it really does put things into perspective and help you to find gratitude which I think is a key component to being happy you know and we really want to uh create help other docs create a practice that serves their lifestyle that serves their lives not the other way around so

you know we were talking about it when we were in Texas Texas with you guys of how many practices that we know how many dog does the the dog walk the the owner not the owner walking the dog right so oh yeah it it's so common and what's the other interesting thing that that uh can't be ignored is how much time and money we as as as dentists as docs we spend on Ce for clinical stuff which we had four five six eight years of training

already and then we go and we spend x amount of hours every year for more clinical training and then you go back to dental school and you go well how much business training did you have and it's most times it's none maybe they had a class taught by somebody who wasn't qualified I mean not to be rude to the to the people that teach those classes but often it's not by someone that's necessarily qualified to be teaching practice management you know and so how much money

do we spend on business CE well it's underserved and nobody you know the the the amount of of time and energy that goes into actually focusing on the the care and and vitality of the practice is so low uh and because there's a broken mentality and I think right now in in the dental climate you know as we sit right now how competitive it is with corporate out there with oh DSO movement if you're a single even if you're within those markets you know uh but

especially if you're a if you're a practice owner if you're a private practice owner what are you doing to work on the health of your practice you know are you doing and we're not saying like we always talk about we just want our 1% of the market right we're not looking to take over dentistry and have every you know every dock out there be a member of elevation Association um because we recognize that you need to find something that fits for you you know you need

but but we do want to encourage uh the docs out there to go and work on the health of their practice because if they they will work on that then they're they're inadvertently working on the health of themselves and their M their well-being their mindset because it feeds into these other areas and I love the way that Jared laid it out that if you have good leadership skills and you're taking care of your practice that's going to bleed over and it's going to help you take

care of your life which should be dictating how your practices run anyway and then that's going to open up opportunities for you to leave a legacy for you to go places like Africa and and and do service or whatever it is that floats your or you know whatever it takes for you to find that fulfillment that we've given up so much of our Lives chasing just an education alone you know so it it is something that we really believe in providing opportunities to put uh our

money where our mouth is so come to Nicaragua we've done trips to Panama we've done trips to bise you know we've done these things where we want a doc and their significant other to come and unwind talk to like-minded people collaborate build these relationships that they can call in each other and say hey what are you doing where are you buying your Botox you know how's that working or you know what's your overhead on this or you know to compare notes and to be in a

safe environment where they're not judged you know because you know one of the things that's difficult in those large you know you go to those big meetings and Jared and I always kind of like cringe and we go to these these big Chicago yeah yeah I don't want to name names but there you go I will yeah I was there it was boring Jared says you get your Snickers in your lanyard right and so and then you go and you sit and you get talked to

yeah for a long time there's no interaction you can't ask questions you can't discuss the issue that you've got burning on your brain yeah so we create an environment uh whether it be our weekl long uh Summit International Summit or whether it be our weekend long Summit like we've got coming up this June uh where we do it local you know but the idea is to create an environment where we can be susceptible and uh be able to discuss things best practices life we can talk

everything from Investments uh to kids to retirement to whatever and or health you know you know how about our how about our actual physical health because dentist get beat up how many D docs do you know that are their backs wrecked by the time they're 20 years into their career never mind 20 10 years into their career they're just wrecked because they don't take care of themselves so there's it's hard on yeah it's so hard and so these are things that we want to draw attention

to and help each other to achieve you know success whatever that looks like for for each person in their lives yeah no I love that yeah I funny enough when you said that the that Dentistry is hard on the body I I just ran into a dentist that I used to work with at the dental lab for years and he just retired and man he said he was in a ton of pain because of dentistry and what you know how he's positioned all day you know

uh felt bad but um yeah so take care of your body take care of yourselves take care of your life your business I think implementing some sort of operating system will relieve a lot of stress Jared you've been running your the practice for a long time like when you when you implemented an operating system like what did that do for you I I can't even tell you you know when I when I learned about it and I'm you know and and I'm I'm I'm reading through

principles of this operating system I was just like blown away like why didn't I have this 10 years ago right why didn't I implement this why didn't I know about this 10 years ago um because essentially what it is is is you are um you're exhausted like like Dan said and we've all said you know at the end of the day you're dealing with these emotional decisions and and you don't have a system for dealing with all the issues you know and instead of instead of

taking time off or out of the practice to do it you just put your head down and and you work and you just try to ignore it and hopefully it goes away you know that that's that that was my number one primary strategy was that I would hope it would just go away after a while you know the all the issues um and then but doing by implementing the system I can't even I can't even tell you that the change that I made in in my

life personally um let alone the life of the life of my family as well my wife and and kids and and then that allowed me to now now do this these two other things you know I do this elevation Association and D Legacy Foundation but the only only reason why I have time and effort and band with capacity to do that is because my practice is well-run now it has this operating system and and and when I what really helped is I was able to put

a I was able to understand who I was what my role was what my expectations were and then all my employees now have clear set expectations that they actually love they one of the major complaints was am I doing what you want me to do and I'm like yeah you're an assistant always questioning yeah you should just you should assist right and and that means a lot of things but but now every week we're like hey this is what you're in charge of how did you

do last week here's the metrics here's what the numbers say nice job you doing great we're gonna you know reward the the team because we together we we we work together and and and and it's just it made a huge difference for the culture of our practice and um and and for the employees uh the team members who who love to work here I love that and and Jared if I could give you a shout out when we talked uh in Texas um when we were

out having a lot of fun and uh talk about you know hurting our bodies uh I I did have a hard time getting out of bed the next morning uh I haven't swung a golf club that hard in a while um but hearing you talk about this just one-on-one when we were talking and how that affected you building this operating system into your practice operationalizing things and then and then bringing on on on Dan and Ryan here you you were able to you got emotional if

I could say I mean not horribly so I mean you know still tough guy I I yeah still tough guy but honestly I could feel the emotion of the weight you telling the story the weight you you remembered it you remembered how you felt and then as you discussed with me all the things that you did in detail I could feel the like Elation of emotion start to just Shed off of you and and you're obviously a very happy guy now and in a very different

place and so anybody who is who is maybe questioning this who's listening I would say these these guys have run through the gamut and learned how to do this and are eager to help you because they've seen how it affects because I saw just the emotional impact in in that 10-minute walkthrough of what you did you could feel it come from you you guys care about this totally thanks appreciate that yeah it's it's there was a like I said earlier at a time 2015 or so

I came home and told my wife that's it we're selling it we're moving to Tonga I said that and and and she's like time out let's kind of put this on the back burner let's kind of work through the process and see what what the frustrations are in the practice and and there were several frustrations but I was I was little IDs session with you yeah totally she was great I discuss and solve the issue yeah right we prioritized the issues so we did it in

order and and just it was you know and it was it was not of the point to where from from wanting to lead Dentistry to hey I I I can run a practice that I I really enjoy I I enjoy coming you know I don't kill myself I'm very profitable um not crazy but I I prioritized my you know my life um and and use my practice now to help run my life help fulfill my my life's goals love it well awesome guys I think this

has been an awesome episode um for those of our listeners who want to learn more about what you guys are doing over at elevation Association or EA as you guys call it uh where can where can they find more information um do have a website yeah stuff like that all the cool kids call it EA so that's that's cool sweet all the cool kids call Bloom Cloud BC so BC what what's a what's a website oh sorry do you guys just have like an Instagram or
