How a membership plan compares to dental insurance
No annual maximum
Dental insurance usually stops paying around $1,000–$1,500 a year, right when treatment gets expensive. A membership plan has no cap — your discount applies to every procedure, all year.
No waiting periods or pre-existing exclusions
Most plans start the day you join. If you need a crown next week, your member discount applies next week.
No claims and no denials
There is no carrier deciding what you are allowed to have. You and your dentist plan the treatment; the plan simply sets the price.
Predictable cost you can actually budget
One monthly or annual fee covers your preventive visits. You know the number before the appointment instead of after the statement arrives.
How joining works
Find a practice offering a plan
Thousands of practices run membership plans on BoomCloud. Ask your dentist whether they offer one — most do, and many do not advertise it well.

Dental insurance alternative questions
- Is a dental membership plan insurance?
- No. It is a direct agreement between you and your dental practice. You pay the practice a monthly or annual fee for defined preventive services and a discount on other treatment. There is no carrier, no claim, and no reimbursement.
- Is a membership plan cheaper than dental insurance?
- For many people yes, particularly if you buy an individual policy rather than getting one through an employer. Individual dental insurance often costs $350–$600 a year with a deductible, waiting periods and a $1,000–$1,500 annual cap. Membership plans commonly run $300–$400 a year with no cap and no waiting.
- What does a dental membership plan cover?
- Typically two cleanings, exams and routine x-rays each year, plus a 10–20% discount on fillings, crowns, root canals and often cosmetic work. Exact inclusions are set by the individual practice.
- Can I use a membership plan with insurance?
- Usually not on the same service — most practices will not stack a membership discount on top of an insurance payment. But having coverage does not stop you from joining: the plan is a direct agreement with the practice, not insurance. Ask the front desk how they apply it alongside your benefits.
- What if my dentist is out of network, or I've hit my annual maximum?
- That is exactly who these plans are built for. If your dentist is out of network with your plan you are already paying their full fee, and once you use up your $1,000–$1,500 annual maximum your coverage does nothing for the rest of the year. Joining the practice's membership plan gets you preventive visits and a discount on treatment for the months your benefits are gone.
- What happens if I move or change dentists?
- The plan belongs to the practice, so it does not transfer. Most practices prorate or refund unused portions — check the membership agreement before you join.
