Selling Vision Plan Memberships at the Exam Handoff
Where enrollment actually happens in an optometry practice, the two-sentence script that works at the handoff, and how to make online signup carry the rest.
By Jordon ComstockSeptember 11, 20263 min readYou can build a perfect plan and still enroll nobody. Enrollment is not a marketing problem — it is a moment problem. There is one moment in an optometry visit where a membership sells itself, and most practices walk right past it.
The moment
It is the handoff: the patient has finished the exam, they are at the optical counter, and they have just learned what their coverage will and will not do. That is when the plan is most obviously relevant. Five minutes later, at the door, it is a sales pitch.
The script
"Your coverage stops at the exam, so the frames are full price today. We have a membership that includes next year's exam and gives you member pricing on everything in the case — want me to show you what it would save?"
Two sentences. No brochure. The optician is not selling insurance, they are offering a better way to pay for what the patient is buying right now.
Who to ask first
Start with out-of-network and self-pay patients, and with anyone whose materials allowance is already used up. They are already paying your full fee, so the plan is a straight improvement for them. Once your team has enrolled twenty of those, offering it more broadly stops feeling awkward.
From the field
The practices that grow fastest do one unglamorous thing: they track how many patients were offered the plan, not just how many joined. Offers are the input you control. When offers go up, enrollments follow — every time.
Let the website do the rest
Not every patient decides at the counter. Put an enrollment page on your website so the ones who want to think about it can join at home, at night, without calling anyone. Those signups arrive in the same member list and start billing on the same schedule.
Make it easy to say yes twice
Confirm the plan in writing, make the first charge match what the patient was told, and send the renewal notice before it lands. Surprise is the enemy of retention. The full sequence is in the vision plan playbook, and the enrollment and billing side lives in optometry membership plan software.
